Letter from Dean Cathy Minehan:

Dear SOM Alums,

The SOM is on the move, working to change gender equity in the workplace and on boards, and improving the understanding of disparities on the management of the U.S. health care system. 

The Boston Women’s Workforce Council, formed in 2013, continues its work to make Boston the best place in the country for working women by closing the gender wage gap. Over 50 companies in the region have signed “100 percent Talent, The Boston Women’s Compact,” a first in-the-nation public –private partnership between the Mayor of Boston, Simmons College, and businesses in the Greater Boston area. The signatories agree to take concrete, measurable steps to close the wage gap in their companies, and report groundbreaking employee demographic and compensation data to the Council every two years. I am honored to chair the Council and to have it housed at the SOM.

The second initiative housed at the SOM, is the headquarters of 2020 Women on Boards, a national campaign dedicated to increasing the percentage of women on corporate boards. The campaign redefines successful corporate governance, gender diversity standards, and creates a cultural imperative for corporate action. SOM faculty co-chair the Boston Chapter of 2020 Women on Boards and annually host the National Conversation on Board Diversity, which will take place this year at Simmons College on November 20, 2014. This year’s conversation will be moderated by former Lt. Gov. Evelyn Murphy, founder of The Wage Project, and features Martha Gervasi, executive vice president of human resources at The Hartford; Robert Rivers, president and COO at Eastern Bank; and Susan Vinnicombe, Deloitte Ellen Gabriel Chair for Women and Leadership, Simmons College School of Management.  

In another vitally important and topical area, we will host an important discussion about health care disparities in the U.S. on November 12, 2014 starting at 5:30 p.m. at the SOM. The symposium,  “Health Disparities – Reflections on the Nature of Disparities and What Hospitals Can Do to Respond,” will feature Lenny Lopez, MD, from the Disparities Solutions Center at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Joel Weissman, Ph.D., of the Center for Surgery and Public Health at Brigham & Women’s Hospital. This program is part of our vision for the new Health Care MBA and reflects our commitment to providing opportunities for our students and the community at large to engage in topics of great importance and impact in health care.

In the school's own words...

The Simmons School of Management educates women for power and principled leadership. This mission distinguishes and enhances our MBA program in two fundamental ways.

First, Simmons is the only business school with a curriculum designed specifically for women. We believe that understanding gender dynamics in organizations and being able to manage them effectively is a core competency that women need to deliver strong results, cultivate critical relationships, build their careers, and secure leadership roles.

The research of faculty affiliated with our internationally recognized Center for Gender in Organizations (CGO) ensures that our MBA teaching and curriculum are at the cutting-edge of addressing gender and broader diversity dynamics in organizations. Publications from the CGO and its faculty affiliates continue to shape the field and are widely cited and used by academics and practitioners worldwide.

Our focus on principled leadership is at the center of our mission and our academic enterprise. From our perspective, principled leaders not only mobilize people to achieve exceptional results and build strong and enduring organizations, but they also ensure that their organizations contribute to a vibrant, ethical, and sustainable society.

The concept and practice of principled leadership is deeply integrated into our MBA curriculum. We first introduce these principles during the orientation for new MBA students and attention is paid to ethical decision making and social impact throughout the spectrum of core and elective courses. Our required capstone course in Leadership, Governance, and Accountability pulls all facets of principled leadership together: ethics, accountability to multiple stakeholders, and responsibility for managing environmental and societal impact.

Simmons offers numerous opportunities to explore environmental management and social impact in elective courses such as triple bottom line accounting, corporate social responsibility, and managing global diversity. Attention to social entrepreneurship and CSR is also integrated within the curriculum of our nationally-recognized MBA entrepreneurship certificate program. In 2006, more than half of students chose to do a practicum with a company where corporate social responsibility is central to the business model. Additionally, about thirty-five percent of Simmons SOM faculty is engaged in research with a CSR focus, directly informing our MBA curriculum.

Extra curricular activities complement our teaching and scholarship. We give priority to bringing in corporate social responsibility leaders as speakers. Last year, we had representatives from BP, Eileen Fisher, HP, Whole Foods Market, and Green Fuel Technologies. Among its many year-round activities, Simmons Net Impact organizes an annual panel of CSR officers. The school routinely provides financial support to students and faculty attending conferences touching on these issues.

Our commitment to social responsibility and principled leadership is embodied in the green design of our new School of Management building. We have committed to attaining LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Certification at the Silver level through vigilant attention to energy and water conservation, use of recycled materials, and aggressive waste recycling.

Our aspiration is to educate principled leaders who will build organizations that are successful by all traditional measures as well as respected for providing equitable workplaces, for adhering assiduously to ethical decision-making, and for aligning social responsibility and profitability in their business strategy.


Renewing our Mission

Strong organizations periodically revisit their mission statements to ensure that they remain relevant, vibrant, and meaningful.  The SOM recently reviewed and revised its mission with input from alumnae (through a survey and the SOMAA), students, faculty and staff, and members of the business community.  The new mission statement reflects the ongoing vision of the SOM as well as our increased focus on principled leadership (including ethics and social responsibility), entrepreneurship, mastery of the quantitative disciplines, and managing in the global economy.

Live Outside the Greater Boston Area? Plan an Event in Your Region

The SOMAA and Office of Development and Alumnae Relations encourage alumnae to network in their regions. To support this and to maximize the number of events that occur, the SOMAA's general practice is to offer a financial subsidy (rather than underwriting the entire cost) for alumnae organized events. However, the SOMAA is willing to fully underwrite the cost of regional "kick-off" events - the first event in any region to bring local alumnae together.
